Natia Sulava, the head of administration for the President of Georgia said that the CEC should make a decision immediately on the opening of a polling station in Strasbourg to allow emigrants the opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote.
Natia Sulava believes that the Strasbourg polling station should open because there are thousands of Georgians living in Strasbourg. At least 400 Georgians are registered on the consular register. And most importantly, Georgia has a diplomatic presence in Strasbourg. “Today the Central Election Commission took a decision on the opening of seven new precincts overseas. The CEC’s decision today does not address the requests of thousands of immigrants who wanted to open polling booths in the major cities of Europe and America.
The CEC also discussed the opening of a polling station for the French city of Strasbourg today, but the commission rejected this proposal.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that only the diplomatic mission of Georgia can open a branch in another country. The refusal was due to a security issue.
The President of Georgia, along with the ambassador of France and other ambassadors from Europe and the United States of America, met several times to discuss the opening of new districts. They gave their full support.
We call on CEC to make an immediate decision about the opening of a voting station in Strasbourg. With this decision, we support our Immigrants to exercise their right of vote, guaranteed by the Constitution,” the statement stated.
