Hungary, widely regarded as the closest EU member to the Kremlin, has repeatedly blocked aid for Ukraine because it “prolongs” or “escalates” ongoing war. The views of Slovakia’s Ukraine-skeptic PM Robert Fico have been echoed by the Hungarian Foreign Ministry Peter Szijjarto, who said on July 23, that Ukrainian military assistance will be blocked until Kyiv permits the transit of Russia’s Lukoil. Szijjarto told ATV that if Ukraine does not resolve the issue then everyone should forget about the 6.5 billion euro compensation for arms transfers that was to be paid under the European Peace Facility.
