Recent incidents, such as cyberattacks and sabotage efforts linked to pro–Russian agents, highlight the complexity of security challenges that Europe faces.
After receiving concrete sabotage threats and espionage, several military barracks have been placed on high alert in Belgium.
The increased security levels highlight the importance of safeguarding military operations and critical infrastructure in the face of a larger pattern of destabilizing actions from Moscow.
The Brussels Times reported that security measures were increased in a few army barracks on Friday, 11 October, due to concrete threats of spying and sabotage. The Belgian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the news.
The security level in several military quarters was raised to level Bravo (the second of four levels) due to the threat.
Specific measures must be taken for each stage. Details of the additional security measures that are triggered by the elevation of the threat levels cannot be revealed for safety reasons. The measures were implemented on Friday and will remain in place for the moment.
Russian sabotage, espionage and threats across Europe
The Belgian Defense Department is yet to provide any further details on the specific threats. The decision could be related to the recent attacks by pro Russian hacker groups on Belgian sites, but this is not confirmed.
Since the Kremlin began its full-scale invasion in Ukraine at the beginning of 2022, intelligence officers, politicians and military officials of the United States, Europe and other countries have warned of the possibility of Russian spying and sabotage on the continent.
According to reports, Russian saboteurs, for example, allegedly set a fire to a large Berlin factory belonging to a defence manufacturer in May this year in an attempt to disrupt arms shipments from Kyiv.
In July 2024, the US and German intelligence agencies revealed that the Russian government had planned to assassinate a powerful German arms producer who was producing artillery and military vehicles for Ukraine.
