Zelenskyy, who was also expected to attend, was scheduled to arrive in Germany at the end of October to take part in the Ramstein meeting about aid to Ukraine. Biden, however, postponed his visit due to the hurricane in the US.
US President Joe Biden will visit Germany on October 18, rescheduling a trip that was originally scheduled for 12 October, but was postponed because of Hurricane Milton. Reuters and German publication Spiegel, citing German government officials, reported the new date.
This visit comes during a critical time in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, when Western allies are struggling to sustain long-term support for Kyiv’s defense efforts. The discussions in Germany will likely focus on coordinating military assistance, addressing Ukraine’s urgent need for air defense systems, long-range weapons and aligning strategies against Russian aggression.
The visit is not a formal visit of state, but will focus on the ongoing work between the two nations. Biden will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and President Frank Walter Steinmeier. Discussions are expected to focus on Russia’s conflict against Ukraine and the Middle East conflict.
The earlier postponement caused the cancellation of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (Ramstein format) meeting, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was to give a “victory” plan to partners. Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, had stated that he planned to discuss the use long-range weapons in Russia against military targets during this meeting. The date of the Ramstein meeting has yet to be announced.
This is the first time in 40 years that a US President has visited Germany.
