Sumy Oblast is located on Ukraine’s border with Russia in the northeast. It is a daily target of attacks and is just across from Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
In recent months, Russian troops increased their use of guided aerial weapons near the border of Sumy Oblast.
In late August, officials announced that they plan to evacuate 45,000 residents of Sumy Oblast. Since then, 16,000 additional people have been evacuated, including 535 adult and 143 child in the last week.
The evacuations continue, after local authorities ordered on September 30 that children and their parents must be evacuated from a larger area within the 10-kilometer bordering Russia zone.
The military administration has noted that all residents within the 10-kilometer bordering Russia zone have been evacuated.
The military administration reported that on October 13, Russia attacked six towns in Sumy Oblast, causing 21 blasts throughout the day. Residents of the region are used to hundreds of explosions occurring every day.
