Ukraine’s Intelligence Agency (HUR) has claimed the destruction of a Tu 134 aircraft, which is typically used to transport high-ranking Russian defense personnel.
According to Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, a Russian Tu-134 transport aircraft of the 117th Military Transport Aviation Regiment was destroyed by Ukraine on the night between 12-13 October.
Ukraine targets aircraft such as the Tu-134, which is used to transport high-ranking Russian officials. This makes it a strategic asset for Russia’s command-and-control infrastructure during the war. By attacking such aircraft Ukraine hopes to disrupt Russian military communications, decision-making, and operations.
HUR reports that the incident occurred on Orenburg-2, which could have implications for Russia’s military command and logistics capabilities.
HUR did not specify the cause of fire, but it is most likely sabotage.
On 11 September, Ukrainian forces successfully shot down a Russian Su-30SM jet fighter over the Black Sea with a MANPADS. The jet that fired missiles towards the mainland Ukraine was part of Russia’s 43rd Naval Aviation Regiment, based in occupied Crimea.
According to the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian defense forces destroyed 369 Russian aircraft and 329 helicopters.
After weeks of planning, the special mission, which killed dozens of elite Russian soldiers, led to full Ukrainian control over the Vovchansk Agregate Plant.
