Donald Trump said that on October 14, he “(got along) very well with (Russian president Vladimir) Putin,” implying the Russian leader often spoke about his ambition to dominate Ukraine. The comments came three weeks prior to the U.S. Presidential election, which could have a profound effect on Washington’s backing of Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. “I get along well with Putin.” “I got; I understand what’s going on,” the Republican candidate for U.S. president said at a Town Hall event in Oaks Pennsylvania, regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It was his favorite subject; he would always talk about Ukraine.” But I said ‘You’re Not Going In’ and he didn’t go in.”

Trump praised both Zelensky’s and Putin’s relationship during their meeting at the end of September. Zelensky met with Vice President Kamala Harri and President Biden. Trump’s boasting of good ties with Putin contributed to concerns about his policy towards Ukraine if he becomes president. According to excerpts from Bob Woodward’s “War” book, Trump has spoken with Putin seven times since he left office in 2021. He also sent a secret message to the Russian president Covid during his presidency. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he will end Russia’s conflict within “24 hours”, without explaining how he intends to do so. Trump’s inner circle has made some statements and reports that suggest this could mean pressuring Ukraine to cede land or give up its NATO ambitions.
