Danish Ambassador: “It’s a pity that opponents” used her article “in a negative context”

The Georgian Foreign Office said on Thursday that Anne Toft Sorensen was the Danish Ambassador in the country. She explained that in her article in which she called Bidzina the former PM, and founder of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, an “oligarch”, her country intended to express its support for Georgian into the Union and that “it is unfortunate” that opponents used the term in a negative way.
Sorensen has been summoned to the after an article was posted on Jyllands-Posten, a Danish portal on Wednesday. In the article, the Ambassador claimed that “the oligarch BidzinaIvanishvili made a fortune in Russia during the 1990s”.
The Georgian side stated that the publication of the Ambassador was used by certain forces to “politically interpret” the publication, which “naturally”, prevented the “effective” implementation of the main priority, as outlined by the European Union, for the country, depolarization.
“We are seeing an excerpt from a Danish piece being used out-of-context in Georgian discussions.” The Embassy does not wish to comment on the above and refrains to make additional comments.
The Embassy released a statement in response to the feedback received on the article written by Anne Toft Sorensen as Ambassador of Denmark, which was published in a Danish Newspaper. It explained that Denmark had continuously supported Georgia’s path to Euro-Atlantic Integration.
“The article was written by a Danish journalist after the historic decision of granting EU candidate status to Georgia. The article focuses on Georgia’s desire to continue its EU Integration and the contribution that Denmark can provide to Georgia, including its newly opened Embassy. Denmark has consistently supported Georgia in its journey towards Euro-Atlantic Integration, and will continue to support cooperation for Georgia’s entry into the European Union.
“We are seeing an excerpt from a Danish newspaper article used out of context by Georgians. The Embassy does not wish to comment on the above and refrains to make additional comments,” the statement reads.
“The ruling Georgian Dream Party, founded by oligarch BidzinaIvanishvili who amassed a fortune in Russia during the 1990s, is in power since 2012. The , led ‘s United National Movement, boycotts work constantly and accuses authorities of politicizing courts, suppressing freedom of , and harassing opposition members,” the Ambassador wrote.
