The 56th round Geneva International Discussions took place on October 5. The Georgian delegation, led by First Deputy Foreign Minister Lasha Darsalia, was in Geneva on October 5. The round was conducted due to the active participation and efforts of Co-Chairs of the EU, UN, OSCE and the USA.
The round focused on the main agenda items of Geneva International Discussions, which were related to the need for full implementation of provisions of the EU-mediated Ceasefire Agreement of 12 August 2008. The Georgian delegation also placed emphasis on the main issue of the agenda, namely the safe and dignified returns of internally displaced people (IDPs) or refugees to their homes.
The Geneva International Discussions began on the basis the Ceasefire Agreement of 12 August 2008. The discussions take place in two Working Groups where participants are individually represented. The first Working Group discusses security and stability within the occupied territories in Georgia. The second Working Group is concerned with the humanitarian and human rights conditions in Abkhazia, Tskhinvali and the surrounding regions. The discussions take place under the co-chairmanship of EU, UN, OSCE and Georgia, with participation from the Russian Federation, USA and the Russian Federation. The Working Groups are also attended by the Head of the Provisional Administration of the Former South Ossetian Autonomous District, the Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia and the representatives of the Sokhumi-Tskhinvali occupation régimes.
