“Many years before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014, our love for Ukraine’s military past began when we were young men. The Ukrainian Insurgent Army and the Liberation Struggle were important to us. Roman Shukhevych’s name, Yevhen Koovalets’, Petro Bolbochan’s, Vasyl Kuk, and the names of other outstanding Ukrainian military leaders were our most important guiding lights. Pokrova Day, which marks the founding of the UPA, on October 14 was also a significant holiday.
What we once read in books is now our daily reality. The same enemy. The same inhumanity of the occupying forces towards Ukrainians. The same hatred towards the enemy.
We do not worship the ashes on this day. We keep the flame alive. The same fire that burned underground in the UPA bunkers. The fire that burns out our fear, weakness, and despair. The fire that manifests in the volleys that our weapons and that our enemies so fear.
I congratulate all the personnel of the 12th Azov Brigade today. You are all deserving of carrying on this fire. You have shown this through your courage, sweat and blood and your indomitable spirit to fight. I am convinced that you are the best possible thing for Ukraine. I hear our soldiers eager to join the ranks, and I see yesterday’s new recruits fighting fearlessly in battle and stopping Russian assaults.
I am sure that UPA soldiers are proud of your daily actions and smile knowing that the cause to defend Ukraine is in good hands. One could not have wished for better successors.
In the darkness of bloody battles you have something that will always be with you. The fire that has lit the path for thousands and thousands of Ukrainian knights.
Glory to Ukraine!
Remember that after the OCU and UGCC switched to the New Julian Calendar, the Feast of Intercession of Holy Mother of God as well as the Day of Defenders of Ukraine moved to October 1. According to historical documents, the UPA’s founding day is likely to fall on October 14, 1942.”
