Tamar Gabunia, Georgia‘s Deputy Health Minister, says that the increased death rate and increased rate of coronavirus could be linked to the spread the Indian strain “Delta”.
She made a relevant statement after the Interagency Coordination Council meeting, adding that the prevalence in Georgia of the Indian strain ranges between 10 and 20%.
“Recently seven more cases of the Indian sympthom have been confirmed. This indicates that the strain is in circulation in the country. This strain is estimated to be present in 10-20% of cases. “It is possible that the rapid spreading of cases and the relatively serious course associated with an increased mortality could be linked to the Delta strain,” Gabunia stated.
She also stated that the Ministry of Health had contracts for the import of 2,5 million doses of vaccine.
“We expect to receive the first shipment in a few weeks and by the end July, there will be over a million vaccinations in the country. This will allow us start the mass vaccination process. Currently, 284 brigades have been mobilized to carry out vaccination. One brigade can perform 60 vaccinations a day. It is also planned to double the number brigades both in Tbilisi, and in the regions,” said Gabunia.
The Deputy Minister spoke also about the expansion of the vaccination centers network and said that consultations with large malls are in progress. The goal is to vaccinate 1 million citizens per month.
Georgian Prime minister Irakli Garibashvili announced on June 22 that Georgia will receive one million doses in two weeks.
