AFP: The UN’s Special Coordinator for Lebanon has criticized Israel after air strikes on the municipal buildings of Nabatieh, killing the mayor and 15 others. Danny Danon, Israel’s UN Ambassador, said on Wednesday that Hezbollah often takes advantage of civilian facilities. “They [Israel] hit civilians, Red Cross and civil defence. They have now targeted a government-owned building. It’s unacceptable. It is a massacre. Previous strikes on Nabatieh in the past few days destroyed historic buildings including a market from the Ottoman era dating back to 1910. The strike on the southern suburb Dahieh was the first in five days to hit the Lebanese Capital. The strike came after the US urged restraint in its bombing of Beirut. Residents of Dahieh began returning to the area in recent days to check on their homes, retrieve clothes and other belongings. Human rights charity Amnesty International said that warnings “did not absolve Israel from its obligations under international humanitarian law“. Israel has expanded its air campaign recently, launching a surprise strike in the far north. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the strike, which destroyed the large residential home rented by the displaced family of Aitou in the Christian village, killed 23 people. Twelve of the dead were children and two women.
