US President Joe Biden announced that a new $425m military aid package would be provided to Ukraine during a telephone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This is a crucial moment, as the Western support is waning and the frontline situation in Ukraine is deteriorating. Ukraine wants increased military assistance and permission to launch long-range attacks on Russian territory with Western weapons. Despite declarations of support, the situation is still at a standstill.
The White House released a statement that read: “In the coming month, the US will provide Ukraine additional capabilities, such as air defense interceptors and tactical air defence systems, artillery and ammunition, armored cars, etc.”
During the phone call, Biden assured Zelenskyy that he would do his best to increase aid before his tenure ends. Zelenskyy noted that the package included long-range and new air defense weapons.
The Pentagon provided more details on the aid provided by the Presidential Drawdown Authority. It includes air defense systems, rocket and artillery ammo, armored cars, and antitank weapons.
The Democratic National Convention on August 19-21 takes on a new urgency, as the party must now formally nominate Joe Biden’s replacement, who has withdrawn his candidacy for the 2024 presidential race.
