Analysts suggest that a shortage of weapons for Ukrainian troops may have contributed to the accelerated Russian advance.
According to analysts at the UA War Infographics Project, Russian forces have significantly accelerated their territorial gains, capturing 5.5 more acres of land in August and September 2024 than they did in 2023.
Russia intensified its offensive against strategic cities in Donetsk, Luhansk and other oblasts. In the last few weeks, Russia has advanced in the direction of Pokrovsk, which is a focal point for intense fighting in this oblast. Russia also made gains at the center of Toretsk. On 1 October, Ukraine withdrew its forces from Vuhledar, a strategically important city located on high ground which the Russians hoped to use as a base for further offensives.
The analysts of the UA War Infographics Project reported on 15th October that Russian forces would capture a maximum 200 square kilometers each month in the first six months of 2024. In August, Russians took 351 square kilometers and in September 468 square kilometers.
