Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, has stated that the alliance’s strategic goal is to provide military support to Ukraine. If at some point Kyiv begins negotiations with Russia to end the war, they will do so in a strong position.
In recent weeks, several foreign media outlets have written that Ukraine is allegedly willing to make concessions to Russia in exchange for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Rutte’s comments seem to coincide with Ukraine’s desire to achieve a just peace via its “Victory Plan.” Rutte can help guide allies to the same direction, one that is aimed at supporting Ukraine without forcing it to the negotiating table.
Rutte noted during a joint press conference with Evika Silina of Latvia that NATO is supporting Ukraine with military aid and will not allow Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to have his way in Ukraine.
The NATO Secretary General stated that the United States, along with other countries, are providing significant assistance for Ukraine. All that is left to do now is ensure that Ukraine can continue to withstand aggression.
“And if, one day, Zelensky and the team decide to discuss how to end this with Russia – he’ll do it from a strong position,” Rutte said.
Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stltenberg stated on 14 October that Ukraine should decide if it wants to negotiate with Russia. The main task for partners is to help Ukraine become as strong as possible.
Rutte also argued that the message to Russian President Vladimir Putin was that “we will continue and do whatever is necessary to ensure that he does not get his way and that Ukraine will triumph.”
