Netgazeti, an online media outlet, reported on October 16 that Georgia’s participation to the Open Government Partnership was suspended. The government administration confirmed this to the outlet. The administration confirmed that it received the suspension notice today. The suspension comes after the government has failed to meet its OGP commitments, and local watchdogs have repeatedly called on the government to do so.
The State Security Service (SSSG), in a statement, claimed that a few weeks before the elections, “groups connected to political circles” would release a “artificially produced” video and audio featuring Georgian government officials. This was done with the intention of “creating a conflict between the branches within the government as well as creating strife among the government and Orthodox Church as well as worsening the relations between the Georgian government and its Western allies.”
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze is of the opinion that the sanctions imposed on Georgia by the United States are ineffective and counterproductive. “Sanctions are counterproductive. Therefore, I am confident that any subject who could theoretically consider sanctions will act pragmatically, and not take such actions that will turn them against themselves,” PM Kobakhidze said to journalists.
Rati Bregadze, the Justice Minister, claims that Salome Zurabishvili’s proposal to create a Coordination Platform in Orbeliani Palace during election day could include elements that violate electoral code. He invited the president to attend the inter-agency meeting today to discuss the issue, but the President refused. The Ministry will still send a second invitation to the President’s Administration to ask for a representative to be present at the next meeting.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Prime Minister of Georgia, has signed a decret granting Giorgi Kalandarishvili the protection of the state. According to a document dated October 10, the Special State Protection Service will provide personal protection before the elections because of “relevant conditions” until the need expires.
SOVA News, an independent Russian-language media outlet based in Tbilisi, reports that the old domain to which it lost access in June 2024 has been taken over and used to spread Russian propaganda by “unknown persons”.
In a press release, the Georgian State Security Service stated that Pridon Pakuri, who had been illegally detained in the occupied territories near the village Zemo (Upper) Artsevi by the Russian occupying force, was now free and in territory controlled by central government. According to the Security Service, the occupying force is solely responsible in the occupied regions and along the occupation lines for destructive actions.
