The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe issued a statement expressing deep concern about the democratic backsliding and deterioration of human rights in Georgia. It warned of a potential deviation from European democratic standard.
In a recent statement, the Congress of Local and Regional Governments of Council of Europe expressed regret for the clear signs of democracy decline in Georgia. They highlighted the growing polarization of the country and the implementation of legislation that is at odds with Council of Europe standards. The declaration expressed concerns about Georgia’s future commitment to democratic principles and the protection of human rights, especially in light of upcoming local and parliamentary elections.
The declaration said: “The Congress deeply regretted the clear signs that democracy is slipping and human rights are being weakened in Georgia.” The declaration cited increased societal polarization, laws such as “Foreign Influence Transparency”, and anti-LGBT legislation as examples of worrying developments.
The Congress also reiterated its commitment towards a constructive dialogue with Georgian officials, but urged them not to take any actions that would worsen polarization and harm political pluralism.
The declaration also referred to the July 2024 statement of the Congressional Monitoring Committee, which raised alarms over Georgia’s potential departure from democratic norms. The declaration stressed the importance of ensuring that all citizens are able to participate equally in the political life, particularly ahead of the parliamentary election on October 26, 2020, and local elections 2025.
