Maria Zakharova expressed Russia’s desire to normalize relations between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. She indicated that Russia was ready to support this process.

Zakharova said that Moscow is interested in normalizing relations between Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. She hoped positive changes in Tbilisi‘s position would be reflected in future discussions and yield concrete results.
She emphasized Russia’s commitment in supporting this normalization. “Russia, as an active participant in international negotiations in Geneva, and the nearest neighbor of Abkhazia Georgia and South Ossetia is very interested in normalizing relations between these states. Moscow is prepared to fully support this matter in both multilateral formats and bilateral formats.

Zakharova, despite these challenges, noted a possible opening: “Recent Georgian statements that they intend apologize to the South Ossetia people for the war initiated by the Saakashvili government in August 2008 gives some hope.”
