Foreign Ministry: Ukraine does not develop weapons of mass destruction

In a statement released on October 17, Heorhii Tikhyi, the spokesperson for the Foreign , said that Ukraine does not plan to develop weapons of massive destruction and is committed to nuclear nonproliferation.
The statement was made after the German news outlet Bild reported that Kyiv was preparing to develop nuclear weapons. The story cited a source unnamed from Ukraine.
“We officially refute insinuations made by unnamed sources, in the Bild magazine, regarding Ukraine’s alleged plan to develop weapons or mass destruction,” Tykhyi said in a statement.
“Ukraine is and will remain a party to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons )…, having renounced the third-most powerful nuclear military capability in the world.” Ukraine, the country that has contributed the most to international peace and security, as well as nuclear non-proliferation, is now under nuclear blackmail by the terrorist state of Russia.
On Oct. 17, President said that he told Presidential nominee that Ukraine must join NATO or pursue nuclear capability for protection in September.
Zelensky clarified his comments by saying that Ukraine does not have nuclear weapons, and the remarks were meant to highlight the failures of Budapest Memorandum.
According to the Foreign Ministry statement, Ukraine agreed in 1994 to give up its nuke arsenal in exchange for security guarantees from the U.S.A., U.K. and Russia.
The statement from the ministry said that Ukraine is “convinced” that the NPT remains a cornerstone of international security.
“Despite the ongoing Russian aggressiveness, Ukraine continues to adhere to the provisions of NPT and remains an active participant in the international non-proliferation nuclear regime.”

The change could delay the Ukrainian squadron’s readiness for the battlefield by several months.
