European Council Conclusions : Georgian Govt.’s actions jeopardize Georgian’s European Path

The released its conclusions on October 17th, reiterating their “serious concerns regarding the course of actions taken by the Government, which runs contrary to the values and principals upon which the European Union was founded”, and reaffirming their support for the EU aspirations of the Georgian people.
The European Council stated that such a course of actions “endangers Georgia’s and de facto stops the accession process” and called for Georgia to “adopt , comprehensive, and sustainable reforms in line with the core values of .” It also stressed that it will continue to closely monitor the situation in Georgia.
“The European Council expects that the upcoming parliament elections will be fair and free, in accordance with , and that international and domestic observers will have unhindered entry to the polls.” In its meeting conclusions, the European Council stressed the need to protect free, independent and pluralitistic media.
The Council also reaffirmed the EU’s “unwavering” support for Georgia’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity within internationally recognised borders, and emphasized the European Union’s commitment to peaceful conflict settlement and its policy non-recognition.
