The European Council confirms once again that the Union is ready to support the Georgians on their European journey. In the conclusion of the European Council meeting, the Council reiterates its grave concerns about the actions taken by the Georgian Government, which are against the values and principals on which the European Union was founded.
In the document, European Council states once again that “such actions are a threat to Georgia‘s European path and stop the accession proces”.
The European Council “calls upon Georgia to implement democratic and comprehensive reforms that are sustainable, in line with the principles of European Integration”. The European Council will continue closely monitoring the situation.
According to the document the European Council expects that “the upcoming parliament elections will be free and fair in accordance with international standards and with unhindered accessibility for international and local observer.”
The European Council also stresses the need to protect independent, free and pluralistic media.
The European Council reaffirms that the EU will continue to support Georgia’s sovereignty and independence, as well as its territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. The EU reiterates its commitment to a peaceful resolution of conflict and the non-recognition/non-engagement policy.
