The Public Defender of Georgia has stated that obstructing the exercise of will during elections is a crime, whether it is through deception, violence, or the use of official position. This statement refers to information being spread about the confiscation of IDs for voters against their wishes.
According to information that has been publicly disseminated, the Ombudsman urges law enforcement agencies to begin an investigation based on possible criminal facts.
“In recent weeks, information from the media, social networks and various monitoring organizations has revealed that unknown persons have been stealing the identity cards of Georgians through intimidation, violence, threats and/or other illegal methods.
The Public Defender of Georgia reminds citizens that obstruction of the will of the people in the elections is a criminal offence, whether it be through deception, violence, or the use of official positions.
The public defender urges the law enforcement authorities, based on information that has been publicly distributed, to begin an investigation on the basis of possible criminal facts.
