According to the Air Force, Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine overnight on 18 October 2024. It deployed 135 Shahed explosive drones as well as unidentified UAVs, from Russia’ and PrimorskoAkhtarsk.

The Air Force reported that Ukrainian defenses including aviation, antiaircraft missile systems and electronic , as well as mobile fire groups, intercepted more than 80 drones in multiple oblasts including Kyiv and Odesa. In addition, 44 drones may have crashed off radar, and two crossed the border into Belarus. According to the Air Force, at the time of reporting (8:43 am), “upto 10 more” drones were still moving through central Ukrainian airspace.
The latest reports of drone activity from airspace monitor channels came at around noon.
According to the Kyiv (KMVA), the air defenses in Kyiv Oblast engaged the drones over 4.5 hours and prevented any from reaching the capital. Serhiy Popko, the KMVA chief, described the attack as one of the largest attacks to date. He also noted that air alerts are now a common occurrence for residents in Kyiv.
Eight Shahed drones were destroyed in Khmelnytskyi Oblast overnight.
