The legend of US broadcaster Larry King died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.
Ora Media, the production company King co-founded with Mexican media mogul Carlos Slim, announced the death of King.
Ora Media released a statement that reads: “Ora Media announces with profound sadness the death of Larry King, our co-founder and friend, who died today at the age of 87, at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.”
King’s son, Chance, confirmed his death on Saturday.
King began his career in Florida local radio in the 1950s. In 1978, he began a radio call-in program. King hosted Larry King Live for CNN between 1985 and 2010. During his six decade career, King met with presidents, world-leaders, celebrities, scientists, comedians and athletes.
King was hospitalized at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles for more than a week after being diagnosed with COVID-19. Over the years, King had suffered from various health issues, including heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer. In 1987, King had a quintuple-bypass surgery. This inspired him to create the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, which provides help to those who do not have insurance.
Ora Media released a statement that stated, “Larry always saw his interview subjects as being the stars of his shows.” Larry liked to ask simple, straightforward questions, whether he was interviewing the U.S. President, a foreign leader, a celebrity, a scandal-ridden personage or an everyday person.
“A good interview – you know more before you start.” King told the Los Angeles Times that you should leave with some of your opinions possibly changed. “You will certainly be entertained – an interviewer is an entertainer.”
CNN President Jeff Zucker released a statement stating “we are so very proud of the 25 years King (King) has spent with CNN. His newsmaker interviews have truly brought the network to the international stage.”
CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour wrote: “King was a giant of broadcasting and a master of the TV celebrity/statesman-woman interview. He was a key figure in the rise of CNN. Everyone wanted to be on Larry King Live. May he rest in peace”.
