Bill Blair, Canada’s Minister of Defense, announced a new package of military aid to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.
According to Reuters, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair said that Ottawa would send a $47-million military aid package to Ukraine. The package will include small arms and ammunition, as well as protective gear.
Canada has already committed over $3 billion to Ukraine’s military assistance following the Russian invasion in February 2022.
“The military aid announced today provides Ukraine important resources it needs to defend itself against Russian aggression.” Blair said that Canada would continue to do whatever it takes to assist them in their victory.
The new aid package includes funding to train Ukrainian troops and is part of the military funding of $362 million that Justin Trudeau promised in July.
Canada had previously allowed Ukraine to use military equipment supplied by Canada, including tanks, armored vehicles and other heavy weapons, on Russian soil.
Andre-Anne Poulin is a spokesperson from the Canadian Ministry of Defense. She said: “Ukrainians are best equipped to defend their homeland. We aim to support them in this endeavor.”
The statement was made following Ukraine’s incursion into Russia’s Kursk Oblast. Media footage shows a Canadian Senator patrol vehicle crossing into Russia in August of 2024. It’s not clear if Canadian weapons were involved in this operation.
