Irakli Kupradze is a leader in the “Strong Georgia coalition” and he responded to the recent departure of two members of his party by accusing both the “Georgian Dream “government and the State Security Service of orchestrating an attack on democracy.
Kupradze attributed the departure of Sulkhan Kocalidze and Merab Kuridze from the Adjara Supreme Council to a wider strategy by Georgian Dream, and the State Security Service, to weaken the political opposition in advance of the upcoming election. He claimed that the move was part of an operation launched against “Strong Georgia“, and an attempt to undermine democratic processes.
Kupradze claims that such actions are commonplace in every election cycle. The “Dream”, the State Security Service, and other political groups like “Strong Georgia” allegedly recruit, indoctrinate or bribe individuals to harm their political movements. Kupradze referred to these tactics as “Bidzina‘s ampsons”, referring to former Prime Minister BidzinaIvanishvili‘s influence on Georgian politics.
Kupradze, despite these actions expressed confidence that “Strong Georgia”, is only getting stronger. He said that thousands of new supporters had joined the movement over the past few months and that he believes the SUS agents’ attempts to disrupt the momentum of the coalition will fail. He also accused Georgian Dream organizing “weak diversion” to cover their fear of Strong Georgia’s rising influence.
Irakli Kupradze described the recent defections of Strong Georgia as part a coordinated effort between Georgian Dream and State Security Service in order to stifle the opposition. He maintains, however, that the movement is gaining momentum and that the actions taken by the ruling party are going to backfire when the country enters the crucial October 26 elections.
