The Netherlands will deliver cutting-edge drones for surveillance to Ukraine as part of a $435 million drone action plan. This will support both the defense industry and the domestic industry.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Defense, the Netherlands will buy a batch of drones worth 42.6 millions euros ($42.3million) for Ukraine.
This is the first Dutch purchase under the drone coalition initiative. The initiative, led by Latvia and United Kingdom, aims to provide Ukraine with military drones as part of its defense against Russian aggression.
The coalition, announced in early 2024 aims to provide Ukraine thousands of first-person-view (FPV), drones that have proven effective during combat operations.
The Dutch company DeltaQuad is supplying Ukraine with “advanced” drones for Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) purposes.
ISR drones can fly long distances and for long periods of time, just like scouts. The Dutch Ministry of Defense states that they are used for gathering intelligence, conducting surveillance, and obtaining real-time data from the battlefield.
More than half of the 400 million euro ($435 million) allocated by the Dutch government to implement the drone plan goes to the Dutch Industry. These funds are used to purchase DeltaQuad.
Security reasons prevent the disclosure of details such as drone type, quantity and delivery schedules.
On 11 September, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is capable of increasing its drone production but it requires additional funding.
The drone coalition consists of 16 countries: UK, Australia, Czech Republic (Danemark), France, Estonia, Italy New Zealand, Canada Lithuania Netherlands Poland Ukraine Germany Sweden.
The coalition members are working to supply various types of drones such as reconnaissance and attack drones, AI controlled unmanned aerial vehicles and counter-drone technology.
