Beka Liluashvili is a member of ‘For Georgia‘ and says that a parliamentary inquiry into the case involving the secret recordings, with participation from the Public Defender, as well as international experts, should be established.
The party claims that the Public Defender’s Office should be involved in any investigation launched by the Prosecutor’s Office.
“The reaction of leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party, including their statements intended to impudently blame their political opponents, showed clearly the difficult reality of the country today. It is clear that the “Dream” is still governed by party interests. It is not their interest to establish the truth.
“On the other hand, we demand that the Public Defender and the international experts be immediately involved in the investigation launched the Prosecutor’s Office.” In addition, Liluashvili demanded that a parliamentary inquiry be established within the parliamentary mandate. This commission would include the Public Advocate and international experts.
He said that he did not rule out the possibility of arresting Alexander Khojevanishvili in connection with this case. Alexander Khojevanishvili is the former deputy chief of the SSG.
“The main priority of the ruling party is to retain power. Therefore, we don‘t rule out anything,” Liluashvili said.
A former security officer is accused of leaking a large cache of surveillance files containing information on clergy members from the Georgian Orthodox church. On September 13, hundreds files relating to clergy, politicians and journalist became public on the internet.
The files are said to include phone conversations containing information about their political opinions, their activities and their private lives.
The opposition claims this is a demonstration of how the Intelligence Services monitor and control everyone in the country. The leaders of ruling party “Georgian Dream” assessed the leak as an attack against the Church and state “organized by United National Movement.”
