The Committee begins the thematic investigation to identify the challenges of decarbonization.
Maia Bitadze, the Chairperson, notes that the achievement of national decarbonization goals requires collaboration among the legislative and executive powers.
“Georgia outlined the ambitious plans provided by the Paris Agreement on UN Framework Convention on Climate Changes (UNFCCC) and has assumed significant engagements. Specifically, Georgia has approved an updated document on a certain share on the National Level, by which the nation has undertaken, compared to 1990′s index, to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent for 2020-2030. If Georgia receives international support, the index could increase to 50-57%. The identification of challenges in achieving the national goal of de-carbonization and the formulation of recommendations will help the Georgian government to effectively fulfill the long-term tasks and goals in this direction. It will also allow the Parliament ensure effective oversight of Government. Bitadze said that it was crucial to achieve collaboration between these two institutions in order to control and complete this complex process.
She announced the composition of Thematic Inquiry Group composed of members of the Environmental Committee, the Sector Economy Committee, the Agrarian Committee, and the EU Integration Committee.
