**Latvian Volunteer Soldier Killed in Ukraine**
Edgars Platonovs, a 41-year-old Latvian volunteer soldier, was killed in action on December 25, 2024. He was fighting for Ukraine as part of the International Legion, which is made up of mostly foreign volunteers.
Platonovs was in the Luhansk Oblast, an area that is largely controlled by Russian forces. His death is one of many sacrifices made by Ukraine and its allies since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The Latvian Armed Forces reported Platonovs’ death on January 10, saying he was fighting near the village of Novoiehorivka. Many foreign fighters have been killed or wounded while serving in Ukraine, but Kyiv has not released casualty figures.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics paid tribute to Platonovs, calling him a hero and offering condolences to his family and comrades. Platonovs’ family praised him as a kind and caring person who always did the right thing with conviction.
Platonovs is the second Latvian volunteer soldier to be killed in Ukraine. In October 2023, a Russian drone attack killed 28-year-old Vitalijs Smirnovs in Donetsk Oblast.
