Iryna Veresschuk, Ukrainian Vice Premier, said: “Ukraine and Russia have reached an agreement to establish a humanitarian route for the evacuation of women children and the elderly out of the besieged Mariupol city.”
Vereshchuk posted on Facebook that “given the catastrophic humanitarian condition in Mariupol, our efforts will be focused here today.”
Thousands of people are stranded in Mariupol port city, which has been under Russian siege for several weeks.
The mayor of Mariupol said earlier that Ukraine hopes to evacuate at least 6,000 women, children, and elderly people on Wednesday, if the preliminary deal with Russia is upheld.
Vadym Bouichenko, the mayor of Mariupol who has now left, said that 90 buses were waiting for the city’s devastated port. He warned that the agreement is still a preliminary one and that there are still about 100,000 civilians in Mariupol.
