Local media reported that a large fire broke out at an oil depot located in Russian-occupied Feodosia on October 10th, at the site of another fire that had been burning for 4 days.
According to the telegram station Crimean Wind, an “instense fire” broke out at around 9 p.m. local, and was large enough to have been visible from all parts of the city.
Videos of the fire that circulate on social media show an explosion that engulfs the night sky, with flames billowing several dozen meters into the air.
The fire broke out at the Marine Oil Terminal, in Feodosia, which was the site of a previous ongoing oil depot fire that was caused by an Ukrainian missile strike on October 7.
Ukraine has yet to comment on the situation.
Local authorities confirmed that the incident occurred, adding that “flammable materials”, unspecified, were released at the site of an of the fires.
Igor Tkachenko said that as of October 10, 1,137 people were evacuated from the area. The Russian-installed Governor claimed that no further evacuations are being conducted after the latest fire.
The Kyiv independent cannot verify the claims made by Russian officials.
Only one other terminal in Crimea handles oil products. This is located in Sevastopol. In March 2024, four drones attacked the terminal, damaging the main fuel pipe and causing an fire that took over an hour for firefighters to put out.
In recent months, Ukrainian forces launched a series drone strikes to damage Russia’s oil sector, whose profits fuel Moscow’s war efforts.
The strike on Oct. 9, which left eight dead and 11 injured, hit a civilian vessel flying the Panamanian flag and damaged its cargo. This was the third Russian attack on a civilian vessel within four days.
