Fathers March Against Government in Georgia
A large group of people, called the “March of Fathers”, has started moving from Republic Square towards Parliament. They are carrying banners and signs with messages like: “This is what our country wants – children to be better than their fathers!”.
The marchers want the government to release all people who were arrested during protests. They also demand fair elections and for Georgia to join Europe. Some basketball players have joined in, including a famous player named Nika Metreveli.
Metreveli said: “Today is an important day in Georgian history. The government is using violence against its own citizens, just like the old government did. We won’t stand for this ‘police regime’ and we want all detainees released.”
This march started because of a big disagreement about Georgia joining the European Union. A party called Georgian Dream said they wouldn’t talk to EU officials until 2028. Many people were upset by this decision, so they began protesting.
