Russia Loses Thousands of Soldiers in Ukraine
Ukraine’s military says that Russia lost more soldiers in the city of Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast, in January than it did during its entire 10-year war with Chechnya. Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Khortytsia group of forces, said this on February 6.
The city of Pokrovsk is one of the most contested areas of the front. Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi previously reported that over 7,000 Russian soldiers were killed near Pokrovsk in January alone. Trehubov repeated these numbers and compared them to Russia’s losses in Chechnya.
Russia’s Second Chechen War lasted from August 1999 to February 2000. Official government figures claim the number of Russian dead during this time is around 6,000. This means that according to Ukraine’s reports, more Russian soldiers died near Pokrovsk in January than did during the entire conflict with Chechnya.
Ukraine has reported staggering losses for Russia since its invasion began. Over 1,000 Russian soldiers are killed or wounded every day. The Ukrainian military has estimated that over 845,000 personnel have been killed or wounded since the start of the full-scale war.
Russia’s attacks on Ukraine continue to be intense. Viktor Trehubov reported that Russia launched 24 assaults against Pokrovsk in just one day, but Ukraine continues to hold the city.
