The recent escalation in hostilities comes amid renewed Ukrainian offensive operations launched on January 5th in the Russian region. The area is considered crucial for any possible peace negotiations. However, Russia has not commented on the claims, and Ukraine has provided limited information on the operation.

According to analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces have advanced in several areas near Kursk Oblast, including southern Berdin, central Russkoye Porechnoye, and central Novosotnitsky. Russia has responded by launching attacks elsewhere in the region.

Russia suffered over 1,970 casualties in small unit actions around Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast. Ukraine’s forces also successfully shot down 28 Russian drones that were launched overnight against Ukrainian positions.
