The Ukrainian government wants strong guarantees of security from countries like the US and UK. This is because of Russia‘s aggressive actions in Ukraine. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently made a statement about this.
Russia Signed an Agreement to Protect Ukraine 30 Years Ago.
In 1994, Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons. In return, three powerful countries (the US, UK, and Russia) agreed to protect Ukraine’s borders and sovereignty. This agreement is called the Budapest Memorandum. However, Russia has not kept this promise.
Russia Has Broken Its Promise.
In 2014, Russia took control of Crimea, a part of Ukraine. It also started a war in eastern Ukraine. Two years later, it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government says that Russia’s actions have made the world less safe.
Ukraine Wants to Join NATO.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that joining NATO is the only way for Ukraine to feel secure again. This is because NATO has many strong countries working together for peace and security.
