Former Air Force spokesperson Yurii hnat told Ukrainska Pravda in an Oct. 5 comment that Russian forces are increasingly using “unspecified” drone models against Ukraine, alongside those of the Shahed kind.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified drone attacks. For the first time since the full invasion of Ukraine, they targeted cities across Ukraine every day for an entire month.
Ihnat, commenting on the most recent overnight attack, said that 10 drones likely belonged to different, unspecified types, and could only properly be identified after an examination on the ground.
Ihnat didn’t elaborate on the type of drones that they could be.
Since the fall of 2022, Russia has launched thousands cheap but effective drones of the Iranian design Shahed against Ukraine.
In an August 2023 report the U.K. Defense Ministry stated that Russia has begun to produce them domestically.
Andrii Cherniak is a spokesperson for Ukraine’s military intelligence. He said that in July, Russia began to use a new type cheaply made drone to identify air defence systems and act as a decoy.
He said that this type of drone, made of plywood and plastic, was used to reveal air defense systems’ locations and film damage. One type can carry a camera with a Ukrainian sim card and send footage to Russia.
Cherniak, a Reuters reporter, said: “They can identify our mobile groups and where the machine guns that can destroy them are located.”
Vladyslav Vlasiuk is an adviser to the head of the presidential office. He also stated that Russian troops used limited numbers of a new drone type — Gerbera — during an attack in July.
