Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset spoke at a press conference today. He said that the country’s government made promises to release people who have been detained under administrative law.
The Secretary General also asked the government not to use too much force against protesters and journalists. He reminded them that these groups have rights, including freedom of speech and assembly, which are protected by the European Convention on Human Rights.
Berset mentioned that there have been concerns about the safety of journalists, who are facing a high threat level. Some journalists were even attacked physically. The Secretary General asked the government to investigate these incidents and hold people responsible accountable.
He also said that an investigation should be independent, transparent, and effective. Berset received promises from the government in response to his requests.
