EU Ambassador‘s Reactions to Georgia’s Decision to Pause EU Bid
The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, has expressed his disappointment with the Georgian government’s decision to pause its bid to join the EU. He called it “very regrettable” and “heartbreaking”.
On November 28, the ruling party, Georgian Dream, announced that they would not pursue European integration for four years. They also refused EU budget support until 2028.
Herczyński said that Georgia is responsible for deciding whether to join the EU. He pointed out that this decision goes against the wishes of most Georgians and previous governments in the country. The Ambassador reiterated that the EU wants Georgia to become a member.
He also mentioned that there was no progress and even regression in implementing EU steps, and that some laws passed contradict EU principles. Herczyński said he had hoped for better after the elections but they were marred by irregularities.
The EU will discuss Georgia’s situation on December 16 and “all options are on the table”.
