Nataliia Galibenko, Ukraine‘s Ambassador to NATO, says that the country is looking to join NATO before Joe Biden leaves White House. She argues that this would leave a meaningful legacy to the US President.
Ukraine has been pursuing NATO membership since the Russian invasion, believing that it is the only way to guarantee its security. Biden, who is said to be skeptical, has not extended an invitation. His presidential term ends 20 January and he has decided not to run for reelection.
Galibarenko, a Reuters reporter, said that “Giving Ukraine an invitation would send a strong political signal.” “We think it could be an important part of this administration’s legacies.”
The upcoming US Presidential election creates uncertainty for Ukraine as Washington has been the primary provider of military assistance against Russia‘s aggression. Although Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris indicated that she would continue to support the conflict, she did not specify how much. Former Republican President Donald Trump was also unclear about his position on the conflict.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, has stressed that an early NATO invite is central to Victory. NATO leaders have reiterated Ukraine’s eventual membership in the alliance. However, details regarding timing and conditions are still unclear.
Moscow has justified its war by citing the potential NATO membership of Ukraine.
“If we indicate an invitation is imminent, it would serve a final judgment for Russia, signaling this issue cannot escalate tensions any longer,” Galibarenko noted.
She stressed that Kyiv does not demand immediate membership talks but a formal invite now would send a powerful message.
