Projects Paused: Georgia’s Public Health Programs Halted
Georgia has put on hold dozens of public health projects that were being worked on with the United States. This is according to Amiran Gamkrelidze, a former head of the National Center for Disease Control.
Gamkrelidze spoke about the current situation in Georgian-American relations and said it’s “not good”. He mentioned that the National Center for Disease Control projects have been suspended. However, other projects with partners like the Threat Reduction Agency are still ongoing.
The suspension of projects is a concern because Georgia relies on these partnerships to develop its public health systems. Gamkrelidze emphasized that the relationships between Georgia and the US go beyond money. The two countries were considered strategic partners, which led to many joint projects in the past.
The impact of suspended projects extends beyond just money. Former employees of the National Center for Disease Control are no longer allowed to attend conferences or training sessions. This is seen as a loss by Gamkrelidze and other experts.
Gamkrelidze stressed that restoring relations with the US is crucial for Georgia’s development. He hopes that public health projects will be revived soon, as these programs are essential for improving healthcare in the country.
