**Journalists Targeted with Spyware**

Amnesty made a statement on Thursday about its experts confirming the use of spyware target journalists from the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN).

Two working BIRN were targeted with Pegasus spyware installed on their smartphones. Amnesty’ Security Lab found out that this is not the first time such an incident has happened in Serbia. In fact, it is the third time in two years that Amnesty’s experts have found NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware being used against civil society in Serbia.

The journalists received messages with links to news items which, if clicked on, redirected them to a decoy page on a media website. This technique was previously seen when a Serbian protest leader was targeted with Pegasus in July .

Amnesty International believes that the continued use of Serbian language Pegasus infection domain names and the targeting of Serbian civil society with a consistent methodology are indicative of these attacks being carried out by a Serbian entity.

The shared its findings with NSO Group, but did not get any response. Amnesty also tried to contact the Serbian Security Information Agency (BIA), but their attempts went unanswered.

Amnesty said that the findings are evidence of the use of invasive spyware and called on the to stop using it. They also asked NSO Group to stop selling Pegasus and the use of its products in Serbia.
