Russia’s Goals in Ukraine Misunderstood by West
According to Anders Puck Nielsen, a military analyst from the Royal Danish Defense College, the Western world is misunderstanding Russia‘s goals in Ukraine. He believes that Moscow‘s primary goal is not to gain territory but to achieve political control over Ukraine.
US President-elect Donald Trump has called for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks to end the Russo-Ukrainian war. However, this push for peace could actually help Russia achieve its goals, says Nielsen.
Many are worried that if Ukraine makes territorial concessions to Russia in exchange for peace, it will lead to a Russian victory. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Military Committee Chair Admiral Rob Bauer have emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine’s military to prevent this outcome.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has also warned against “appeasement” in peace talks, saying that US strength is needed to counter further Russian aggression.
