**Ancient Fortification Found in the Gradac River Canyon**
A small fortification, a watchtower, has been discovered near the Celije Monastery. It is believed to date back to the 3rd or 4th century.
The site was first discovered ten years ago. Archaeologists started researching and excavating it five years ago as part of a project funded by the Ministry of Culture.
**A Mysterious Pile of Stones**
People who knew the canyon of the Gradac River thought it was just a pile of stones on a hill above the river. But archaeologists found something much more interesting. They discovered a rectangular tower made of broken stone, a water cistern, and many remnants of military equipment.
**A Road Through History**
A particularly important discovery is the remains of an old road that connected the Valjevo and Pozega basins. The fortifications were likely built to protect the road, travelers, and goods from attackers and robbers.
“The fortification was built to protect the road,” says Nevena Pavlovic from the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Valjevo. “It was a way to surveil and signal with other fortifications along the old road.”
