Georgia’s path to Europe in danger
Most people in Georgia want their country to follow a European way of life. They show this by holding peaceful protests and saying they want to be part of the EU.
But the ruling party, Georgian Dream, is not listening. Instead, they are using violence and water cannons against protesters. This is causing problems for Georgia’s bid to join the EU.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock says that instead of making progress towards joining the EU, Georgia is taking steps back. The country has had elections that were criticized by international observers, and there have been restrictions on LGBTQ rights.
Baerbock says that Georgian Dream is missing a historic opportunity to join the EU. She emphasizes that the country’s partnership with Germany is being jeopardized by this behavior.
Germany has reduced its cooperation with Georgia and suspended support projects worth over €200 million. Baerbock says they are also considering further measures, such as ending the visa-free regime for Georgian officials or imposing targeted sanctions.
The German Foreign Minister is calling on those in charge of Georgian Dream to take action to end the political crisis and restore trust with the people of Georgia. She says this is the only way for Georgia to have a future in the EU.
