Georgian Minister of Justice Speaks Out Against Davit Kezerashvili
Davit Kezerashvili, a former Georgian Defense Minister, has been found guilty by the European Court of Human Rights. The court ruled that Kezerashvili misused 5 million 60 thousand euros meant for the Georgian army.
The money was intended to be used for combat training, but Kezerashvili signed a fake contract with a company registered offshore. No actual training took place, and the money was wasted. This happened just before the August 2008 war.
Kezerashvili also tried to claim moral damages from the state in the Strasbourg court, but his request was denied. The European Court confirmed that Kezerashvili committed a serious crime and upheld the verdict of the Georgian Supreme Court.
Anri Okhanashvili, Georgia‘s Minister of Justice, spoke out against Kezerashvili at a press conference. He said that the Strasbourg court found no political grounds for not prosecuting Kezerashvili. Okhanashvili also pointed out that some European colleagues had previously portrayed Kezerashvili as a media manager or caretaker.
Okhanashvilli called this a “worthy victory” and congratulated the Georgian state, army, and society on it. He expressed hope that his European colleagues would react to Kezerashvili’s guilty verdict.
