US Condemns Repression in Georgia
The US government is concerned about the decision of Georgia’s ruling party, “Georgian Dream“, to stop the country’s bid to join the European Union. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at a meeting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta.
Blinken also condemned the violence and repression against people who want their country to stay connected with Europe. He said that the reports of attacks on journalists and their arrests are particularly disturbing.
The OSCE has been monitoring elections around the world this year, including in the US. Blinken noted that despite Russian interference, a recent election in Moldova was well-administered. However, observers in Georgia reported voter intimidation and attempts by the ruling party to use its power for advantage.
Blinken emphasized the importance of the OSCE’s work in protecting civil society, freedom of the press, journalists, anti-corruption activists, and human rights defenders. He said that “Georgian Dream’s” actions highlight the need for this work.
