United States Sanctions Bidzina Ivanishvili
The United States has imposed sanctions on Bidzina Ivanishvili, a Georgian politician. He is the founder and honorary chairman of Georgia’s ruling party, Georgian Dream.
Ivanishvili was sanctioned because he undermined Georgia’s democratic and Euro-Atlantic future. This means that he worked against Georgia becoming part of European and North American countries, instead supporting Russia. The US says Ivanishvili’s actions have damaged democracy in Georgia.
According to the US, Ivanishvili has enabled human rights abuses and limited freedom in Georgia. He has also stopped Georgia from joining Europe and North America, which is something that most Georgians want. As a result, Georgia is now more vulnerable to Russia, which occupies 20% of its territory.
The US strongly condemns Ivanishvili’s actions and the actions of his party, Georgian Dream. They have violently repressed citizens, protesters, journalists, human rights activists, and opposition figures.
