Australia has mentioned supplying “air to ground precision munitions” (JDAM-ERs) to Ukraine twice, but without naming them specifically.
Australian Defence Magazine reports that Australia has donated to Ukraine several Joint Direct Attack Munition Extended-Range glide bombs (JDAM-ER), following their withdrawal from Royal Australian Air Force service.
Ukraine is actively using these weapons against Russian targets that are hardened, such as bridges and command post, demonstrating the successful integration between advanced NATO weaponry and older Soviet–era aircraft. The first documented use in Ukraine of US-developed JDAM-ERs occurred in March 2023. US-supplied versions were deployed by modified Soviet-era MiG-29 jet fighters.
According to the Australian Defence Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Plan, released on 30th October, Australia will retire its F/A-18A/B Classic Hornet Fleet in 2021 and remove the Mk.82 500lb (2226 kg) JDAM ER munitions built in Australia.
Australian Defence Magazine confirms, while the exact timing remains unclear, that at least some weapons were later transferred in Ukraine as part Australia’s ongoing support to Ukraine.
