BBC News: UK surgeon’s account about working in Gaza hospital for a month

AI

retired surgeon described the daily influx of victims from bombings and shootings while volunteering at a Gaza hospital.
Prof Nizam Mamode from Brockenhurst in worked at Nasser Hospital for a month between August and September. He has just returned to Britain.
The 62-year old said that each day, he saw 10 to deaths and 40 people with serious injury.
The former clinical leader of transplant surgery for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, London, said that most of the victims are women and children.
Prof Mamode said that the hospital, which had been raided by Defence Forces (IDF) back in February, is the last one still “functioning on a significant basis” in Gaza.
He said that doctors were dealing with one or even two mass casualty incidents a day following bombings and aerial drone attacks.
The surgeon who had previously worked in zones said that it was “unlike any other thing I’ve seen”.
He remembered: “It had been a complete shock. It’s like an atomic explosion has just happened the moment you cross into Gaza.
“All you can see are rubbles for miles. You drive through this landscape for 30 minutes, and there are few people around, only a few armed robbers.
“And then, you come to Gaza’s central area where you have a million-and-a-half people crammed into a very small space, with tents on every available piece of land.
“We were dealing with mainly trauma victims… people missing their arms and legs.
“I was shocked to see that it continued day after day, and that this has been going on for over a year.
There was no respite. “We would be dealing with these victims almost every day.”
Prof Mamode said that he would return to Gaza, if asked.
His visit was arranged by the British charity Medical Aid for Palestinians which has been active in the region since 1982.
